Büroleitung der Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung in Tel Aviv: Auf zu neuen Aufgaben!

Es gibt eine Zumutung, die größer ist als jene der Zeit, in der wir leben: Nämlich, dieser Zeit ohnmächtig gegenüber zu stehen. Dem Krieg, dem Erodieren demokratischer Strukturen und völkerrechtlicher Normen, der gesellschaftlichen Verrohung tatenlos zuzusehen.

Umso mehr bin ich der Heinrich Böll Stiftung zutiefst dankbar, mich mit der Leitung des Tel Aviver Büros der Stiftung ab dem kommenden Sommer betraut zu haben. Mit dem Privileg, mich für unsere gemeinsamen Werte tätig einsetzen zu können, in dieser Zeit, in der sowohl die israelische als auch die deutsche Gesellschaft mit grundsätzlichen Fragen nach national geltender, universell fundierter und völkerrechtlich verbriefter Verantwortung angesichts von Krieg und Populismus konfrontiert werden. Mit Fragen des demokratischen Zusammenhalts ringen, wie auch mit der Notwendigkeit einer inklusiven, demokratischen Erinnerungspolitik und einer umweltbewussten, sozialen Nachhaltigkeit angesichts von Rassismus, Antisemitismus und gesellschaftlicher Ausgrenzung.

Es ist ein Privileg - und eine Verpflichtung zugleich, diesen Treffpunkt von Akteur*innen demokratischer Resilienz aus beiden Ländern mitgestalten zu dürfen, und zwar im Gespräch mit weiteren Akteur*innen aus der Region und aus der EU. Dabei freue ich mich auf die Arbeit mit dem Team im Büro, mit den Kolleg*innen weiterer Stiftungen und Auslandseinrichtungen im Lande, mit den hbs-Büros aus der Region und aus der ganzen Welt wie auch mit der Stiftungszentrale in Berlin. Meinen Vorgänger*innen, die das Tel Aviver Büro aufgebaut und etabliert haben, bin ich ebenfalls zutiefst dankbar, allen voran Claude Weinber, den ich im Sommer ablösen darf.

Wer mich als Autor kennt, weiß, dass jenes Privileg und jene Verpflichtung in meinen Texten widerhallen und weiter widerhallen werden. Mit den Worten von Heinrich Böll gesagt:

„Die Sprache kann der letzte Hort der Freiheit sein. Wir wissen, daß ein Gespräch, daß ein heimlich weitergereichtes Gedicht kostbarer sein kann als Brot, nach dem in allen Revolutionen die Aufständischen geschrien haben.“

And now in English:

There is an imposition that is greater than the imposition of the times in which we live: Namely, to stand powerless in the face of these times. To stand idly by and watch the war, the erosion of democratic structures and international legal norms, the brutalization of society.

I am therefore all the more grateful to the Heinrich Böll Foundation for entrusting me with heading the Foundation's Tel Aviv office from next summer. With the privilege of being able to actively promote our common values at a time when both Israeli and German society are confronted with fundamental questions of nationally valid, universally based responsibility under international law in the face of war and populism, while wrestling with questions of democratic cohesion. With the need for an inclusive, democratic memory politics and environmentally conscious, social sustainability in the face of racism, anti-Semitism and social exclusion.

It is a privilege - and at the same time an obligation - to be able to help shape this meeting point of actors of democratic resilience from both countries, in conversation with other actors from the region and the EU. I am looking forward to working with the team in the office, with colleagues from other foundations and foreign institutions in the country, with hbs offices from the region and around the world, as well as with the foundation's headquarters in Berlin. I am also deeply grateful to my predecessors who built up and established the Tel Aviv office, especially Claude Weinber, who I will be taking over from in the summer.

Anyone who knows me as an author knows that this privilege and obligation echo and will continue to echo in my texts. In the words of Heinrich Böll:
